Choosing the Perfect Bed and Breakfast for Your Asheville Getaway

How to Choose the Perfect Bed and Breakfast for Your Asheville Getaway and more

Choices, choices, choices. When it comes to choosing the perfect bed and breakfast for your Asheville stay there are several things to consider. For many, it starts with location, amenities and guest reviews. It's also a good idea to think about the activities you want to do first and then find something that’s not too far away. Whatever you choose, it always comes down to personal preference. I

Here, we’ve curated a list of tips for how to choose the perfect stay for your Asheville getaway.

8 Tips for Choosing the Ideal Asheville Bed and Breakfast

1.  By Location Location Location

Historic Neighborhoods

Asheville’s bed and breakfasts are scattered across various charming neighborhoods, each with a unique atmosphere. For instance, there are several historic neighborhoods in Asheville including Montford and the Grove Park area. Montford is a great place to be and there are several top locations to choose from that include: Pinecrest, Abbington Green, Carolina and 1899 Wright Inn and Carriage House. In the Grove Park neighborhood, first developed in the 1920s, guests will find themselves surrounded by beautifully restored classic homes and tree-lined streets. The Albermarle Inn and Beaufort House Inn are both ideal choices. All are close to downtown too.

Proximity to Biltmore Estate

If visiting the Biltmore Estate tops your list, you’ll want a location south of downtown. The Cedar Crest Inn is only three blocks away. If you’d like to visit the tallest peak east of the Mississippi –Mt Mitchell– then something more to the north like the Inn at Amaris Farms is a better choice. And if you’ve heard about our North Carolina Arboretum located within the Bent Creek Experimental Forest, Bent Creek Lodge is a best bet. Check out the interactive map on “Our Inns” page to get familiar with the different areas.

Get away from the City

For some, their Asheville getaway is more about peace and quiet rather than the hubb-bubb of the city. In that case, consider Inn at Amaris Farms, located just 20 minutes from downtown Asheville, 10 minutes from quaint downtown Weaverville in a country setting. There's also The Reynolds Mansion with a panoramic westward view (great sunset) of the mountains located at the base of Reynolds Mountain just 10 minutes from downtown Asheville. And of course, our newest member, Andon-Reid Bed & Breakfast in Waynesville (largest town west of Asheville by 30 miles). At any of these, you can enjoy the natural surroundings and still have easy access to great dining and shopping.

2Consider the Overall Style

Asheville has an impressive collection of bed and breakfasts that range from historic homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places to cottages in the city, modern farmhouses and many more. On our Home page, in the “Book Now” box and under the ‘All Lodging tab, you can narrow your search to include several choices. For example, the Reynolds Mansion is one of the few remaining pre-Civil War homes in western North Carolina.

3. Size does matter when it comes to your overall experience

More rooms or less? There are pros and cons to each. On the pro side, smaller B&Bs such as Pinecrest often offer a more intimate and personalized experience. Guests can expect a cozy, home-like personal luxury atmosphere, and the owners frequently provide personalized attention and local knowledge, making stays feel more unique and tailored. On the flip side, larger ones such as the 1899 Wright Inn and Carriage House, The Reynolds Mansion or the Albermarle Inn can offer a a wider selection of rooms, more extensive breakfast menus, or other additional services. Additionally, smaller B&Bs may have limited availability, especially during peak travel seasons. The decision ultimately depends on what type of experience you value most.

4. Check the Amenities and Upgrades

Each property offers a different set of amenities. Common amenities you might want to look for include free Wi-Fi, parking, private bathrooms, private gardens, and gourmet breakfast options.

Some properties may also have extras like hot tubs, discounted attraction tickets, spa services, fireplaces, or curated local tours.

We even have some Inns, like the Wright Inn, that offer eBike rentals and electric vehicle charging.

5Read Reviews and Testimonials

Guest reviews and testimonials can provide invaluable insights into the quality of service, cleanliness, and overall experience at a bed and breakfast and often provide personal details that may match your own preferences. Websites such as TripAdvisor, Yelp, and even Google Reviews are great places to start.

6Personal Touches and Special Packages

Many bed and breakfasts offer personal touches that can make your stay special. This might include special dietary accommodations, romantic getaway packages, or themed rooms. If you’re celebrating an anniversary, birthday, or any special occasion, ask about special packages or add-ons to enhance your experience.

7Consider the Hosts

The hosts can significantly influence your stay. Warm, hospitable hosts tend to create a welcoming environment and often provide great local advice. Check the bed and breakfast’s website or reviews to get a sense of the hosts’ personalities and the type of atmosphere they cultivate.

8Evaluate Price/Value

While bed and breakfasts can range widely in price, it’s essential to consider what you’re getting for your money. Sometimes spending a little more can result in a significantly better experience. And, while many think that choosing a franchise hotel or Airbnb is a more reasonable way to go, quite often, after you add in all the taxes, cleaning fees and more, the cost of a unique B&B is often quite comparable especially when you figure that it will include a hearty breakfast and often, an afternoon treat.

Following these tips can help you find a charming and comfortable bed and breakfast that will make your Asheville visit unforgettable. Happy travels!
