Summer in Western North Carolina is peak festival season with one happening nearly each weekend near an Asheville Bed & Breakfast Association Inn. One such treasured event is the annual Sourwood Festival, held each August in downtown Black Mountain. Celebrating its 36th year, the free festival kicks off on Friday, August 9 at 7 p.m. with the Sourwood Idol amateur singing competition and festivities continuing until 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 11.
In addition to music and dancing, nearly 200 vendors will be on hand with arts & crafts, an assortment of food, and children’s activities, all in a laid-back, alcohol-free environment. Further distinguishing itself are the festival’s bee demonstrations, featuring the gourmet sourwood honey from which the festival draws its name. Paired with a stay at a local bed & breakfast, it’s a weekend sure to be one of the highlights of your year.
