Asheville Beer Week

The 2nd Asheville Beer Week is coming up May 25th – June 1st and will be filled with opportunities of all kinds to celebrate craft beer. Events of the week include tastings, tours, meal pairings, speakers and educational activities. The week long celebration will culminate on Saturday, June 1st with Asheville’s 4th annual Beer City Festival at the Roger McGuire Green. There will be dozens of breweries and plenty of live music at the festival. The festival is a ticketed event, and we recommend you get your ticket soon. Don’t worry, though, there’s plenty of other opportunities to participate if the festival doesn’t work out. The website, ashevillebeerweek.com, promises an app to help you keep track of everything, but your innkeeper will have plenty of good suggestions to help you choose the activities most appealing to you.

24TH ANNUAL ASHEVILLE HERB FESTIVAL

April 21st, 2013 by Asheville BBA

Asheville Herb Fest

Asheville Herb Fest

There is no better time in the spring to stay at an Asheville Bed & Breakfast and spend time at some of the outdoor events in Asheville.

One of our favorite events to kick off growing season here in Asheville, NC is the annual Asheville Herb Festival at the WNC Farmers Market. This event is a destination for locals and herb enthusiasts throughout the Southeast. Nearly 60 businesses from WNC will gather for three days to share information and sell a huge array of herbs and herb-related products. An information booth is staffed by local Master Gardeners and vendors often have various areas of specialty knowledge such as medicinal herbs, cooking with herbs and growing from seed. Herb products on hand for purchase will include herbal lotions, soaps, shampoos, medicines, and herb-related crafts, gifts & books. You can buy how-to books on cooking with herbs, herbal healing, and herb gardening, and even take a break to enjoy a fresh-cooked lunch and herbal beverage.

Many of us make this our one stop event for all of our herbs, flowers and heirloom produce plants for our container plantings and gardens. The festival is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Biltmore Estate:Tulips and “VANDERBILTS AT HOME AND ABROAD”

March 24th, 2013 by Asheville BBA

Flowers and the Biltmore

Flowers and the Biltmore

If you are planning to stay with one of our Asheville Bed and Breakfast Inns this spring, then you’ll want to consider a day excursion to the Biltmore Estate. Biltmore’s gardens were designed by Frederick Law Olmstead and the variety and number of flowering trees, shrubs and flower beds is stunning.

Biltmore Blooms with a Festival of Flowers will run until May 31, 2013. You will be surrounded by everything from enormous wisteria vines, innumerable tulips, pansies, azaleas to so much more. If you have a green thumb or need inspiration, this is a must see when visiting Asheville.

A new display, The Vanderbilts at Home and Abroad, opens at Biltmore on April 7. The exhibit takes center stage in Antler Hill Village’s Legacy building and showcases items from the Vanderbilt’s personal collection. Included in this exhibit are Samurai armor and an intricate Cartier vanity and a lipstick case encrusted with diamonds and jade. An early Harley-Davidson motorcycle will also be on display.  The family’s love of motorized transportation was unmatched by anyone during that time. You will also learn how the Vanderbilts were saved from going on the Titanic. Very enjoyable for history buffs.

Chimney Rock State Park Events

March 11th, 2013 by Asheville BBA

CRP
Spring is here in the mountains, and we welcome the songs of returning migratory birds, green shoots pushing out of the ground, and the first honeybees in our gardens. It’s a gorgeous time to visit an Asheville Area Bed & Breakfast, and the Blue Ridge mountains in general. There are numerous opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, whether it be strolling a gallery walk or out on a hiking trail. Chimney Rock State Park, located about 25 miles southeast of Asheville, offers a nice daytrip option with seasonal adventures. On Sunday, April 14th, Simon Thompson will lead a guided walk to identify many of the breeding birds in the area. Chimney Rock is an official site on the NC Birding Trail, and this promises to be an enjoyable event. Advance registration is required.
Green Thumb? Your eyes may be more attracted to the ground in search of flowers than to the birds in the trees. Wildflower photographer, Steven Faucette, will lead a Spring Wildflower Walk on Saturday, April 20th. The walk is 1-2 miles along and you’ll have the chance to see and learn about native wildflowers and many more of the hundreds of plants living in the park.  Online registration is recommended.
Be sure to ask your innkeeper for recommendations as well. Beautiful gardens abound in Asheville, and your innkeeper will have all the best information!
Click below for these and other events at Chimney Rock State Park.

Spring INN Asheville Tour of Inns 2012

April 9th, 2012 by Asheville BBA

The Inns of the Asheville Bed and Breakfast Association (ABBA) are again holding a spring tour of Inns. This year’s 2-day event will be held June 9th and 10th and will feature 15 of our historic properties. Eight Inns will be on tour on Saturday and the other seven on Sunday. Again each Inn is partnering with an independent restaurant, providing a “Taste of Asheville” in addition to providing a glimpse into our historic residences.

Last year the tour was held in April and benefitted Manna Food Bank. This year the tour will be in June , when many of our gardens will be in full summer bloom. Our beneficiary this year is the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP). We are excited to support this organization that is a national leader in the local food movement. ASAP is a strong supporter of the farm to table concept and all of our restaurant partners this year follow this philosophy. ASAP summarizes their commitment on their website by stating they “help communities preserve their agricultural heritage, increase access to fresh, healthy food, and strengthen family farmers.”

The tour last year hosted almost 200 visitors, many of whom were local residents eager to visit our historic homes for the first time. Our Innkeepers were delighted to interact with our tour guests and talk about the history of our properties. We hope to see many more faces this year as we share culinary treats from our restaurant partners. Expect surprises this year as some inns may feature local musicians and artists. Visit the ABBA website, Tour of Inns where the Inns are listed with their restaurant partners. Tickets can be purchased online at this site.

Spring Tour visitors learn about A Bed of Roses

Spring Tour participants visit A Bed of Roses

Our first Spring INN Asheville Tour of B&Bs was a success by any measure. As many as 200 folks visited Asheville Bed and Breakfast Association member B&Bs on April 16 and 17, taking home goody bags and a zillion decorating ideas.

Our food sponsors came through with fantastic appetizers, which pretty much disappeared before the tour ended. Next time we will request more. Manna Food Bank will benefit from their generosity. Once the ticket tally is complete, ABBA will send them a check.

The winner of the raffle for a $250 gift certificate to an ABBA inn was Sally Jones of Asheville.

For a recap of our sponsors, please visit our tour page, which we will update with the next tour as plans firm up.
